Remember the good old days when you were in school and had the long, Summer break?
Ah, magical times! Freedom, little to no responsibility, no stress. What were you thinking when you constantly said "I want to grow up!" or "I can't wait to grow up!" ?Don't worry, we all used to say it, and now regret it deeply.
Now, in our 20's, we start to really know what life is all about. Now, we know that everything has a price, be it actual money, time or our sanity. Now, we start to understand responsibility. If you're like us, the less lucky ones, that have to work to live a nice life, (and I'm not only talking about blogging for a living here!) then you know how hard it can get to keep focused on your goals, your work and how hard it is to keep yourself motivated. Not to mention all your luckier friends on social media.
Oh, how they like to post the "happy pictures" of them on vacation while you work, and work and work! Before we get to the point, let's share a little bit about us.We are Maya and Andy. Two young millennials in our 20s who moved 3000 km(almost 2000 miles) away from home, in search of a better lifestyle.Andy is currently working full time at a soul-sucking job at a transport company, and collaborating with me on the blog. Me, being Maya, am now a full-time blogger, aspiring writer, and freelance photographer.
Because we are living on the coast of Spain now, it's even harder to think about working, setting goals, achieving them. Here we are, working our asses off every single day, trying to make a better future for ourselves, and literally, everyone around us is here on vacation. Seriously. It's one thing when you live somewhere colder, but here, all you see, every day, are people going to the pool, or to the beach, having fun, drinking, relaxing, having brunches after brunches. It's kind of painful. How do you stay focused on your job, your goals, when literally everything around you screams Summer vacation? That's the problem we're focusing on today!Enough chit-chatting, let's get to it!
How to Stay Focused during the Summer
1. The morning routine
You have the usual: the glass of water to kickstart your gut, washing your face and brushing your teeth. But, the most important thing is to never, ever start your work day without eating breakfast.Make sure to always eat a balanced breakfast, like oatmeal with fresh fruits, boiled eggs with some avocado toast, a small salad, and some tea/coffee, or cereal ( but try to stay away from the unhealthy, sugary ones! I know it's hard, but try!).If you're a freelancer or a blogger, you can create a more complex morning routine and include some exercise in there as well. It will give you the energy you need to get out of bed and conquer the world.
2. Stay hydrated
Throughout the day, drinking that water is a must! Especially in the Summer, when temperatures are high as the sky, it is super important to always have a bottle of water near.Try reducing coffee and tea and fancy up your water a bit. 3. Ignore "the background noise"
By background noise, we mean everything that it's distracting you, or wants to do it. From that little voice in your head that says, pun Friends on replay for the 1Mth time, to the sound of the people around you who are just having fun while you have to work.We know how annoying that may be. But paying attention to little things like that will only keep you further away from your goals. Whatever they may be.
4. Meditate daily
We've heard this so many times that it literally drove us mad at one point. We couldn't understand how meditation can lead to success, especially with all the stress that surrounds all of us on a daily basis. The funny thing is, after actually doing it, you understand why it's important to take some time every single day to just BREATHE and clear your mind.If you're not doing this, start small. Find 10 minutes in your day just for yourself. It can be while taking a shower, or a bath, or just sitting comfortably in your favorite spot of the house.Close your eyes and BREATHE.
5. Exercise daily
In your 20's exercise is crucial. While you get accustomed to living on your own, having a job, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning for yourself, try to never forget that having a healthy body also means that you need to move it, move it!Half an hour per day is not that much when you think about it. If you're lazy like me, try to incorporate your exercise routine while you're watching something on youtube, a movie or a TV show.Related: 7 Lazy Girl Routines You Need To Have That Perfect Beach Body
6. Find an accountability partner
If you work in an office, for example, it's a little easier, because you have colleagues, and you most likely have a boss that keeps an eye on you. But, if you are a freelancer, a blogger or an entrepreneur, there's where this get's a little tricky. If you don't have a lover or a life partner, you need to reach out and find your accountability buddy. It can be a relative you're close to, your best friend, or an online friend from a Facebook Group, why not?Find that person that you know will keep you in line. Motivate each other, grow together.
7. When to Say "No" and "Yes"
The hardest thing you must learn is to say "No". To social media, as much as possible, to gaming when you should be working, even to reading when you should be writing. ( talking to myself here!)I know how hard this is! It's a constant battle, day after day, but it can be done!Say "Yes" to fresh air, at least 30 minutes per day. No matter where you're working, but especially if you're working in an office, or if you're a blogger constantly with your eyes on the screen, you need a break. Go outside!Say "Yes" to your body when it wants a short break, once in a while. Don't force yourself to work too hard, because you'll eventually burn out and be tired all the time, your reflexes will be slowed down, and it will be harder for you to regain your focus.
8. Don't multitask
If you're like me and are accustomed to multitasking on a daily basis, but when the Summer hits, you're feeling a little lost, you're going slower, and are under the impression that you're drowning when you take on too much, find that multitasking is the reason why.Just don't multitask! It's that easy. Chill, breathe. Take it one step at a time, one chore at a time. No one will kill you if you don't multitask now, not ever your boss.
9. Reward yourself
Don't forget to reward yourself after every task you've completed successfully. A small "treat" will definitely make you feel better, especially after a stressful job.And it doesn't have to be food related, oh no! It can be anything that makes you feel happy, from taking a break to just listen to music, to finally reading that last chapter of that book you can't stop thinking about.
10. Relax!
At the end of every single day, not just the weekends, just take some time and relax. Grab a beer, or a nice rose put on a stand-up comedy show and laugh it up! Relaxing on a budget is not that hard to achieve.Do whatever it is that you think might help you go completely Zen. You'll sleep better, you'll feel better, you'll wake up better. It's so important to relax! We hope you enjoyed our 10 life hacks you need to stay focused during the Summer, and if you liked it, make sure to pin it, share it, tweet it so the world can see!
